赤ちゃんポストに置き去りにされ、ヴェネチアにあるピエタ院で母の姿も愛情も知らずに育った少女チェチリア。彼女は、毎晩こっそりベッドを抜け出し、ろうそくの灯りを頼りに宛名のない母への手紙を綴っていた。院から出て外の世界で暮らすには、母が迎えに来るか、貴族と結婚するしかない。そんななか、バイオリン教師として院に赴任したアントニオ・ヴィヴァルディに、チェチリアは第一バイオリンのリーダーに任命されることに。ヴィヴァルディからの厳しい練習に耐えながら、バイオリンの腕を上げていくチェチリア。いつしか2人は心を通わせるようになるが、院が決めたチェチリアの結婚相手である将校が戦争から戻ってくる。チェチリアと将校の結婚が迫ったある日、事件が起きてしまう。
